Kurdish Treasure
Kurdish
language as one of the great Indo-European
languages (The branches of Indo-European still
represented today by one or more languages.) is related to Persian, while it is
distinct in grammar, syntax and vocabulary. There are four general
regional dialects in Kurdish language: Zaza; Northern Kermanji (Badinani,
Botani, Hakari,Baizidi,Shamdinani); Southern Kermanji (Babani, Ardalani,
Mukriani, Sorani,Kalhuri, Gorani);Lurri(Bakhtyari,Laki, Faili). Kurds by and
large understand each other easily. The Kurdish people from every part of
Kurdistan and abroad have felt the need for a comprehensive
two-way Kurdish-English / English-Kurdish dictionary. It is hoped that the
present compilation will satisfy that need. While this dictionary is
the outcome of more than eight years of diligent research, it is just
the beginning of an attempt to compile an up-to-date Kurdish-English /
English-Kurdish dictionary.
This book has been prepared with a view to unifying, approximately, all
the present dialects, spoken all over Kurdistan. It would have been easier
to read alphabet of this dictionary if Kurds had a unified script. But for the
moment, seemingly they prefer to take it easy. This work might be
reckoned as the first step toward such a unified script which it is easy to
distinguish; readable not only by beginners but also by ordinary users.
Although it is impossible to describe the sounds of a language accurately
merely by reference to the sounds of another language, nevertheless, For easy
reading this propositional Kurdish alphabet, a pronunciation key has been
introduced. Kurdish i e è a â o u are pure, in other words,
they are monophthongal not diphthongal like most English long
vowels. Generally speaking, there are no silent letters here. Every word
is pronounced just as it is spelt. It is now time to ask others to undertake a
similar task on behalf of the Kurdish language. Needless to say, in a work of
this length there is abundant opportunity for errors. For such I encourage the
readers to alert me to any that they discover. Moreover, I would be very
pleased to receive further suggestions for entries from readers. Finally, I
should like to extend my gratitude to all Kurdish and non-Kurdish people who
have expressed their special interest in this dictionary.
